Kathy McCullough learned to fly at the age of sixteen, but her story began much earlier. Her challengers, accomplishments, and indomitable spirit come to life within the pages of Ups and Downs. Becoming the fourth woman pilot hired by Northwest Orient Airlines in 1981 and earning her captain wings in the Boeing 747 a quarter of a century later, was not an easy journey. There is no better way to understand the gender issues in a cockpit than through the eyes of a woman pilot who lived the many challenges.

Kathy takes us on the flight of he life with compelling stories of what it took to get into the cockpit of the largest airplane of its time, and what it took to stay there. Now retired, Kathy lives with her husband Kevin on a wheat ranch in eastern Oregon. She shares her experiences with young adults, inspiring them to explore the world.

Everyone who has a goal in life will see herself in the pages of this book. Anyone who has had a dream come true will empathize with the struggle it takes to make that dream a reality. And each of us who has a thirst for adventure can take a long drink from these pages.

What does it take to become a female pilot?
Exactly the same thing it takes for you to achieve your dreams.

Ups and Downs edition by Kathryn McCullough SelfHelp eBooks

An interesting and entertaining account of the determination required to be one of the earliest women 747 pilots. The author covers the main events of her life and also some of the subtle influences that brought her past obstacles to achieve a dream. We follow her from growing up in Florida to current Oregon ranch living. Each chapter can stand alone and also has a brief insight about the lesson learned, either at the time or with hindsight, sort of like a fortune cookie at end of each chapter. Aviation has a lot of crazy stories and those are here too! You will be very impressed with the determination it took to stick to the goal of being a female pilot for a major airline. Imagine trying to do a job, where mistakes are fatal, while also being harshly judged. Once I started reading I just had to keep going until I read the whole book!

Ups and Downs edition by Kathryn McCullough SelfHelp eBooks Reviews

Kathy's book is a good book to read! From her early days as a child, Kathy learned that life can bring you a variety of experiences, good and bad. Experiences that can make you or break you. What Kathy did with them was to allow them to teach her and make her into an excellent pilot, but more than that, a caring woman, daughter, sister, wife, mother and friend.
Great story by an extraordinary pilot, mother, wife, and author. Read entire book in two days - hard to put down after starting. Amazing success story of perseverance in a non traditional carrier. Girls CAN do it all!!!
A very interesting and enjoyable read on what it is to become an airline pilot and some of the realities of what the job holds. Also; a stark reminder of the struggles and challenges women face, especially when trying to integrate into a predominantly male dominated field such as aviation, which unfortunately, still has not fully caught up in that regard. As a retired airline pilot, who once worked with Kathy, I can relate to the many joys and rewards, and also the challenges, that she faced during her career.
What a delightful book! Honest and fun, Kathryn shares her ups and downs with us and reveals what it was like (and sometimes still is), a difficult career as an airline pilot...a women in a man's world, especially in the early days. As a former airline pilot and flight attendant, I identified very closely with the experiences shared in this book. I highly recommend this for all pilots and for those who are women aspiring to a career as an airline pilot, learn about what it was like to be a female pioneer in aviation.

This book was one of those rare ones that hooks you once you start reading it. I spent a few nights reading until midnight because I simply could not put it down. It is amazing to learn about the trials and tribulations that early Female pilots had to endure to make it in the male dominated profession. The Author does a phenomenal job inspiring the reader to get out and chase your dreams. There will most definitely be obstacles, but if you have the will, there will be a way. I'm very critical with my books as I am a bit of a book snob, this is definitely a must read.
Once again we have a story of determination. It demonstrates life in America in achieving success in an area not welcoming to all. To hear that you can not succeed because so few like you have is heartbreaking and wrong. That the author had to show excellence just to get into the door of each opportunity saddens me. My wish is that future consideration of employment for all applicants be given points for ability and the person with the highest points gets the job. Although other considerations must be considered, gender should not be one of those considerations.
Thank you Kathryn for sharing the very interesting journey of you flying career.
Kathy did an outstanding job sharing her journey. I had the great opportunity to fly with her on the 747, and know many of the players and had a fun time reliving the experience. I agree... much has changed, but we have a long way to go. If you want to know what it was like being a woman flying the largest plane in the world, and some of the challenges, this book is for you. There could be novels written on the events, plus more. Hopefully this will be the first of many. The photos were a great touch!
