This book is one to put on your must read list! It is a heartfelt journey of a women growing up with a mother suffering from mental illness. The writer takes you through her struggle, her pain, her bitterness and the JOY and VICTORY she finds in a relationship with Jesus Christ. Mental illness is not a topic discussed much in main stream society, but this book portrays the reality of it and the hope that can be yours if you or a loved one are dealing with mental illness. I highly recommend this book!
Excellent read! In this book Elaine shares her memories of growing up with a mother whom she loved deeply, but was consumed by the inner voices of mental illness. Not understanding what was happening, she coped in the only way she knew. Often times escaping in rebellion. Elaine's courageous journey reveals how God works in our lives to bring us closer to Him and help us heal; to tear down walls, "one brick at a time.
I absolutely highly recommend you read this amazing book!. I couldn't put it down, as soon as I started reading it. Elaine Oostra remarkable story about her struggles with her mother's illness, and how God helped her get through each part of her life is so inspiring. I keep reaching for her book and rereading it again and again. I'm in awe how truly her strength and faith are. Elaine I thank you so much for writing this amazing book!. Elaine talks about growing up with a mother who had a mental illness and how she had built up a wall of bitterness and anger. She illustrates how her faith in God helped her break down that wall. Elaine shares stories during her childhood - some sprinkled with her sense of humor and some of the tougher times. Her willingness to share her story is a blessing to the reader. I really enjoyed the book. It is a testimony of hope for those wanting and needing to break down barriers of anger, bitterness and despair.
I found this book an honest and helpful, true life story of Elaine's journey to find healing from a childhood lived with a mother who had a very serious mental illness. It is encouraging to know that we do not need to live our lives stuck in the past through the healing from the Lord. I encourage everyone who wants to find peace and restore relationships to read this book.
This personal experience book is very helpful for families that have had to deal with a family member with mental illness. Elaine was young when her mom's symptoms surfaced, and really didn't know what was happening. The role model of her father, who was caring and cared wife and family for the best he knew was impressive. His heart must have hurt to have to deal with wife and family. Although Elaine struggled, and made some choices that could have destroyed her, she found people and Jesus who could give her the support she needed. Not only is this a story of living with mental illness in the family, it is a testimony of how Jesus can change lives and a reminder that he is always with us--with helpful scripture! Thank you, Elaine!
Amazing story told by Elaine of how God's plan for her life was filled with struggles, strong emotions, and yet covered in grace. Excellent book if you are living with unresolved hurt. Elaine shows biblically how to give it over to the Lord and live in his peace.
